Then one day some of BeliÕs spies came upon Gwydion in the forest, and there was a skirmish there, and two of the warband were slain. But Gwydion prevailed, and the spies were put to flight.
Gwydion came to Math, saying ÔIt is known that Beli still seeks me for bringing the swine of Annwn back to Gwynedd. I fear that it should put the land in danger while I remain. Therefore with your leave I will go from here for a year, and my brother Gilvaethwy will lead the warband in the circuit of the land.Õ And that seemed good to Math and they parted.
Gwydion summoned his enchantment and put himself in the semblance of a stag, so that he might not be found. And he went off into the forest.
